Long weekend debauches and single launches, country hits and metal riffs.
The Beast has a big month of music and festive(ish) events for the month of April. There are weekly soul sessions and nights filled with songs of the country and cowfolk, as well as the beloved Tuesday Trivia.
For the big holiday, they have an Easter Egg-stravaganza (note: actual eggs not guaranteed) with a full long weekend of pseudo-religious debauchery and kink, a boiler room featuring a lauded Revs DJ, a 420 celebration of all things stoner – right down to the special stoner-inspired menu. Then, a feel-good session of bouncy indie sounds to lift the spirits on April 24, the public-holiday-eve. Plus, some metal and “bottle-o rock” for good measure.

It’s a new weekly ride into alt-country town with an ongoing series of balladeers, cowboys and crooners. Patrick Wilson takes the stage on April 10 with his electrified country rock. Next week (public holiday eve), Kiwi folk queen Kerryn Fields is joined by country pop songstress Brooke Taylor and the alt-country stylings of Katie May. Then April 24 sees a rounded line-up of alt-country Americana powerhouse Elly McK and The Unbelievers, with No Sleep Til Texas and Nathan Seeckts.

Chuck the chocolate and leave your Jesus guilt at the door. Beast is doubling down on sin with their long weekend of shenanigans. It kicks off with Bad Friday, with theatrical genre-blending headliner Father Daddy, along with Electric Self and Eris & The Disciples. Expect musical treats and Easter bonnets (well, kind of) and even a visit from the Easter (Rope) Bunny! Plus, a special stall by kinky vegan leather purveyors, Lolliwraps. It might not be holy, but it’ll be a whole lot of fun.

It’s a stoner’s paradise. Local hardcore punk outfit Pizza Death headline, with songs about (you guessed it) pizza and death. It’s fitting, then, that they’re supported by local psych rockers Mojo Pin with their melodic, hypnotic grooves, their sound described “like a psychedelic pizza with all the toppings – extra mushrooms.” Lap-steel-guitar and drum duo, Blue Sabbath, show off their unique genre of “post-apocalyptic blues”. They’ll be slinging a full special menu of stoner food just for the occasion. There’s no better way to share this most momentous day in the calendar year: 420.

Bouncy punk band Sick Visor formed during lockdown four years ago. Luckily only their good vibes and fun-loving spirit are infectious now, and this two-piece composed of buddies Alex and Katie are one to watch. Preferably at the free show at Beast. They’re supported on this public holiday eve by queer indie-rock trio out of Adelaide, Stormy-Lou and Tassie-raised singer-songwriter Elkie Kershaw. It’s just a night of feel-good vibes and bright young talent.
