One half of the duo Sasha Crnobrnja is waking up to a sunny day in his new hometown of London and is in a jovial mood following the release of In Flagranti’s fourth studio album, Worse For Wear.
“It’s 9.30 here” he enthuses while brushing the sleep from his eye. “And the weather is beautiful outside now and blue skies which is very rare. London is a great city and a big city and it has everything I need.”
While far from a household name, the duo’s star is still rising and their rather different way of producing their work is constantly churning out LPs and remixes at a steady pace. “My partner Alex and I divide our work into me doing the production and Alex does all the visuals, graphics and album covers. And he does a lot of the research stuff as he is a bit of a collector and loves records and movies and he is always sending me snippets of new stuff he’s found and ideas. Then I chop it up and turn it into a track and then I send it back to him and then he’ll do little edits and send it back to me and I play it in the clubs to see how it sounds and when we both agree it’s good then it becomes one of our tracks. We do lean heavily, well for the past ten years at least, on a bit of a disco tip. A lot of the sounds I use, drums and bass sounds, are from old ’70s records to try and get that vintage sound. Dance music that sounds like when you walk into a thrift store.”
In an interview on the back of their last album, Brash And Vulgar, Crnobrnja said he couldn’t see the duo making another album but it seems the tide has turned. “When I said that I didn’t think we would make another album I was more talking about the way music is released right now. So if you make an album and it’s digitally available, people can maybe buy one or two tracks. So I was more wondering whether we should release another album or just release tracks. The album is also something that Alex and I do for us, for our personal need to create a product and finish a project. The last two years of our existence went into this one package.”
The boys are headed down under for Summadayze and are ready to bring their audio-visual spectacular to Australian crowds for the first time. “Usually I do half of the set live with Ableton and a laptop with a controller with lots of loops and things that I can randomly mix and kind of make tracks on the go. Each set is different depending on what the mood is like. Alex will be doing the visuals and for the second half he’ll be DJing and he does mostly classics and edits of the stuff that influences our live sets. I am totally looking forward to getting back to Australia as I feel we have a bit of a following down there.”
