The Campbell Arcade beneath Degraves Street has been home to indie labels, record stores, zine stalwarts Sticky Institute and more for years. Now, that’s all set to change due to the development of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel.
As reported by The Age, owners of the stores have been told their leases will end in July 2019 to accommodate construction of the Tunnel.
Development plans for the Melbourne’s long-awaited Metro show that areas of the heritage-listed arcade are up for prospective demolition – putting stores within the arcade at risk, including Sticky Institute.
“We’re obviously distraught by this news, and have spent the past week looking into how best to fight the proposed development plans,” said Sticky Institute via their newsletter. “We’re still not entirely clear how the new build can possibly disregard the heritage status of the arcade, but we’re obviously also worried about how and where Sticky can continue if these plans go ahead.”
