If you’re a gig freak like us, you’ll be happy to hear that live music at the Penny Black is cranking it up to 11 this month.

Built from an old post office, this long-standing venue is an epicentre for live music, culture and good vibes in Brunswick. It’s somewhat of an adult playground (though kids are welcome too).

The following shows feature some of Australia’s most exciting talent and stuff for all of Brunswick’s quirky tastes. With a luxe sound system and enough room for the crowd to jump around, the bandroom is a treat and they don’t discriminate – everything from sweet, singer-songwriter strums to queer punk can be heard this month.

Edgy but always inviting, familiar but with its own distinct personality, the Penny Black is like a neighbourhood pub on steroids. Check ‘em out.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Naked Face

  • –

Impressive vocals elevate this EDM duo above the throng of electro-pop artists emerging today, with multi-instrumentalist Steve Slik and bassist Luke House now boasting three number-one singles on triple j Unearthed, including their anthemic breakout hit Eyes In Love. They’re being supported by indie-pop outfit Guava Canal.

Society of Beggars

  • Friday, 19 April 2024
  • 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Society of Beggars once described themselves as “if you ever wanted to hear Nirvana fight the Bee Gees whilst a bunch of old Greek guys play in the background and take shots of ouzo then you’ll love us”. This acclaimed group are a very tight, experienced outfit, with Yianni Michalopoulos’ epic vocals and spellbinding lyricism perfectly suited to his brother, Dimitrios’ droning guitar work. They’ll be joined by superb special guests in Echo Social Club and Nighteyes.

Self-Titled Festival

  • Saturday, 20 April 2024
  • 7:30 pm  11:30 pm

For those in the know (like the show’s passionate hosts Zac and Max), Sunbury community radio is the place to go for some of the best acts in Melbourne’s punk scene. The duo have been killing it with Self-Titled FM, a weekly radio show on Sundays at 99.3fm, and now they’re bringing Melbourne Self Titled Festival featuring Orphix, Volt Jolt, 7 Pound Halo, Dylan’s Omens, Ivy Walkers, Mancrave, Achey Peace and Nylon Phoenix.

Winnie Lane Double Single Launch

  • Sunday, 21 April 2024
  • 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Multidisciplinary musicians with a dash of classic training, Winnie Lane are an indie-rock group with a knack for interesting melodies and accomplished harmonies. This four-piece have all the ingredients for major success and they’ll be launching two exciting new singles, Nighttime Driving and Do You Know What I Mean? in a day party with Paprika, Cherry Factory, Hannah Cooper and DJs.

The Vendettas

  • Friday, 26 April 2024
  • 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

If you like Stone Temple Pilots and Exile On Main St, and who doesn’t, then you’ll love The Vendettas. Veterans of the local scene, we’ve previously described them as an all-guns-blazing barroom brawl with high octane alcohol-fuelled riffs, addictively catchy melodies and fist-pumping rhythms – pwoah!  They’ll be joined by dynamic rock-country group Aimee Francis and the Midnight Hours, and soaring pop-rockers The Suburban.

BONEZ Festival

BONEZ Festival is returning to Melbourne with Art Simone, The Beautiful Monument, Ruby Slippers and more

  • Saturday, 27 April
  • 3:00 pm – 3:00 am

Are there any better Queer parties in Australia (read: the world) than BONEZ? We seriously doubt it, especially when they feature lineups this good. Art Simone, Ruby Slippers, Theresa Problem, Xai, and Alessa Evil are all celebrated drag performers, while The Beautiful Monument, Excuse for an Exit, A Swift Farewell, The Maggie Pills, Baby Shower, Trauma Ties and Piano Punk make for a massive night of live music.

Gordon Lewis

  • Sunday, 28 April
  • 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Highly versatile singer-songwriter and accomplished guitarist Gordon Lewis is an indie-rocker with thoughtful lyrics and a 90s influence. He also plays in favourite local bands The Revolation and Little Shogun. Armed with his soulful voice, guitar and looper, expect a wonderful night of local music.
