Hip hop this week: Eminem continues lawsuit against New Zealand National Party

While DMX returns to the studio and B Wise joins Jay Rock on his Australian tour.

EMINEM CONTINUES LAWSUIT AGAINST THE NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL PARTY

We thought Eminem was all good with things out this side of the globe? Apparently not.

You might remember back in 2017, a court had ordered the payment of NZD $600,000 from the New Zealand National Party to Eminem, after they had parodied ‘Lose Yourself’ as part of John Key’s 2014 campaign ad. Since then, the amount of money was dropped to NZD $225,000 after it was taken to an appeals court, which has now made the 8 Mile rapper up the ante.

The case has now gone to New Zealand’s Supreme Court, with Eminem challenging this most recent development, with his team stating that the song was never cleared for use, remains the most important Eminem song in Eight Mile Style’s catalogue.

Just recently, Eminem drew a crowd of 46,474 fans at a show in Wellington, to wrap up his huge RAPTURE 2019 tour.

B WISE SET TO SUPPORT JAY ROCK ON AUSTRALIAN TOUR

Coming off the back of his recent win at the FBi SMACS for Record of the Year, B Wise is bringing Area Famous to huge stages in Australia, supporting US rapper Jay Rock. Jay Rock, part of Kendrick Lamar’s Top Dawg Entertainment crew, will be touring his acclaimed album Redemption through Australia’s east coast after what seems like a forever-long wait – the addition of B Wise is a perfect fit.

The release of B Wise’s Area Famous further positioned the Sydney rapper as a formidable talent and of course, as part of the diverse Elefant Traks label, Wise has been going from strength to strength in establishing himself as a long-lasting member of Australia’s hip-hop scene.

The Melbourne leg of the Jay Rock Australian tour comes to The Croxton Bandroom on Tuesday March 19. Head to www.jayrock.com/tour for more information.

DMX AND SWIZZ BEATZ REUNITE IN THE STUDIO

DMX has been stirring up quite a lot of excitement since his recent release from prison and re-entry into the music world. One of rap’s most respected and beloved artists, DMX – as part of the Ruff Ryders – achieved global fame off the back of some incredibly strong albums and a performance style to match. And for X, Swizz Beatz has been there right along the way.

A recent Instagram post from DMX showed the Ruff Ryder duo back in studio, presumably working on the new DMX album. It’s been over 20 years since the ‘Ruff Ryders Anthem’ dropped to acclaim, an example of DMX at his absolute prime. Now it looks like some more gold might be on the way. For Swizz, his career has enjoyed steady success, producing some iconic hip hop hits including Kanye West’s ‘Ultralight Beam’, DMX’s ‘Party Up (In Here)’ and Beyonce’s ‘Ring The Alarm’ and ‘Check On It’ singles.
