After releasing a string of singles in 2016, New Jersey’s MC, Twondon was expected to release an album this year. Instead we’ve got a new single in Supreme feat JAG. Aside from the fact that it’s not an albums worth of music, it’s pretty good. No word on that album yet though.
Horrorshow have just dropped an albums worth of music titled Bardo State. The first track My Time has battle rap verses juxtaposed over almost pop sung hooks. This became a bit of a theme over the next few tracks. Horrorshow still have their trademark melancholy lyrics in their songs. The verses that appear in Ceiling Fan or Push are quite dark. Solo’s lyrics don’t come across as forced, he has a genuine knack for writing good, sad songs.
Stormzy released his album Gang Signs & Prayer. If you aren’t a fan of grime probably steer clear of this one. For those that are, this album is a treat. U.K rappers have always shredded dancey beats. Stormzy is no different. Gang Signs & Prayer is by no means just a club banger album. Blinded by Grace is a Gospel song. Cigarettes & Cush (feat. Kehlani) is slowed down and best described as sounding like an R&B track. The predominant sound is still grime but don’t be surprised at the depth of Stormzy.
The live shows this week are a little slower than last. Defenders of Style and Scribe have left us but there’s still international talent floating around. Atmosphere and Brother Ali are touring together again and are playing at 170 Russell Street on Friday March 3.
Atmosphere has been releasing music since 1997 boasting a discography of eight studio albums and a few EPs. Their most recent album Fishing Blues came out last year. Trying to figure out what album to brush up on pre-set is tough but I would suggest Sad Clown Bad Summer Number 9 or When Life Gives You Lemons because they are classic.
If Atmosphere do stick to just playing their new stuff it won’t be disappointing. Fishing Blues is still a good alternative to the commercial rap scene. The lyricist Slug still avoids writing lazy fake lyrics, instead telling unique stories that would be at home in a short story competition.
Atmosphere is joined by the always smooth, Brother Ali. Despite not releasing an album since 2012, Brother Ali has been a busy man. Throughout 2016 the rapper has appeared on tracks with the Hilltop Hoods, The Evaporators, and Khalil Ismail.
For those looking for something a little different the Horse Bazaar is hosting Can I Kick It on Wednesday March 1. It’s an open mic night for those who are brave enough to kick a freestyle over a beat. You have the choice of watching up and comers test their skills or picking up the mic and testing your abilities. Doors open at 8pm.
