Australia’s booming hip hop scene has extended its global reach over the last couple of years, with innovative artists such as Remi, Sampa the Great and Manu Crook$ all achieving worldwide recognition and respect. International rappers and producers continue to collaborate with local Aussie artists to experiment with new sounds and conjure new beats.

When US hip hop icon Chingy toured down under earlier this year, the Right Thurr rapper knew he had to jump on a track with Melbourne-based emcee 10YRWAR. Together they created She Want It, a cruisy banger with trap undertones. Melding elements of electro and hip hop, 10YRWAR spouts sexy lyrics and raps over a melodic dial tone that echoes throughout the track. Chingy contributes with an exciting trap-heavy verse, adding ferocious energy to the sexy song. She Want It is a successful hip hop collaboration that proves 10YRWAR has the ability to cross musical genres and geographical boundaries.

Another local artist making waves is sassy Sydneysider Okenyo. Her brand new single Woman’s World has been hailed as an R&B anthem for women, with fierce, powerful lyrics placed atop marching drums and blaring horns. Okenyo has an interesting history, with her venture to fame beginning with a series of acting jobs – including a stint as a presenter on Play School. As she delved into the world of music, Okenyo was praised for her emotive lyricism and dynamic vocals. She signed with Elefant Traks last year, stunning audiences with her soulful debut single 10 Feet Tall. Woman’s World is an empowering track by Okenyo that oozes confidence and authority. An impressive first track from her upcoming EP, expect to see more from the enigmatic singer.

Groove Jam is a funky introduction to Burn City’s coolest hip hop duo Pinnacle. Young emcees JaX and Spenser Pheonix bring the boogie on the groovy new single, coupling clever lyrics with a fresh new flow. The feel-good track is the latest release from the super-slick kids who released their debut EP Pinnacult in March last year and dropped their follow up mixtape Sounds of the South Sun a little while later. With beats by US producer Mykal Riley, Groove Jam is a high-energy hit. Take a minute to check out the bright and bouncy visuals and keep an eye out for future releases from the talented duo.

London grime rapper AJ Tracey will make his way to Melbourne next month. Named the winner of MTV UK’s Brand New 2017, the rising star is known for his sharp wit and unique flow.  Don’t miss the show at Laundry Bar on Wednesday September 20.

It’s time to get ready for The Get Down 3.Hosted by MC Wasp, the night will showcase some of Melbourne’s best hip hop talent with appearances by local artists Avii, Von Voddy, Krown, Lady Lash, Outsiders and Motley. The event will take place at Horse Bazaaron on Saturday August 5.
