Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson and You Am I’s Davey Lane team up for one-off Melbourne show

Words by Tom Parker

They’ll hit the Brunswick Ballroom stage on Wednesday July 7.

It’s not every day you get to see music royalty perform on the stage, let alone two luminaries who have forged their own disparate reputations and careers.

It was a bit of a once-in-a-blue-moon moment seeing Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly, Stella Mozgawa and Kee’ahn in the one bandroom – for Milk Records’ current residency at Brunswick Ballroom – and now the venue is doing it again, this time welcoming two mavens from a different expanse of the music industry.

On Wednesday July 7, Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson and You Am I’s Davey Lane will team up for a one off show at the Brunswick Ballroom. It comes off the back of Jamieson’s new singles, ‘Kapow!’ and ‘Rubberhead’, the former of which features additional guitars and production from Lane.

What you need to know

  • Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson and You Am I’s Davey Lane are joining forces for an exclusive Melbourne show
  • They’ll take to Brunswick Ballroom on Wednesday July 7
  • Alongside that, the venue has also announced revered folk trio Woodlock to perform a special pop-up show at the venue on Saturday July 3

Keep up with all the music news, reviews and interviews here.

‘Kapow!’ is “about that thrill and sense of wild abandonment one feels when falling in love for the first time,” Jamieson says of the song. “That kind of precipice moment where you stand and feel exhilaration and a rush – when everything is everything.”

Joining Jamieson on stage, Davey Lane will also be performing his own set, drawing largely from his 2020 solo record, Don’t Bank Your Heart On It. Punters might also get the chance to see Lane perform ‘Reign In Silence’, a yet-to-be-released new single from the You Am I guitarist and vocalist – a cover originally written by Belarusian doom metal outfit Gods Tower.

Alongside the Jamieson x Lane double bill, Brunswick Ballroom have also just announced a surprise gig for Saturday July 3 with New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based folk outfit Woodlock taking to the stage. The band have established quite the reputation since they came onto the scene as nascent buskers in 2012.

Now, they’ve racked up millions of streams, and millions of fans in the process. They create music perfect for hungover days, or cruisy Sundays – it’s tender, warm and delicate.

Phil Jamieson and Davey Lane come to Brunswick Ballroom on Wednesday July 7. Before that, Woodlock arrive on Saturday July 3. Grab tickets here and here.
