Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) will relocate to Fed Square in spring 2025, becoming a central hub for electronic music creation in Melbourne's CBD.
MESS and the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co) have announced the electronic music organisation will establish a new home at Fed Square.
The relocation will make MESS’s collection of over 1,000 historic electronic instruments accessible to a wider audience of creators and visitors.

Founded in 2016, MESS has grown from a passion project into a vital resource for electronic music creators. The not-for-profit organisation houses an extraordinary array of synthesisers, drum machines and modular synths spanning the entire history of electronic music development.
The new location will allow visitors to explore the collection, book studio sessions to create with the instruments, participate in workshops and courses, attend events, and connect with fellow electronic music enthusiasts.
The move follows a successful summer of live music at Fed Square, which attracted over 85,000 attendees to performances by artists including Caribou, Glass Beams and Kneecap, cementing the precinct’s reputation as a key destination for music and creativity in Melbourne.
“Since opening in 2016, MESS has grown into a world-renowned centre for the exploration of electronic music,” MESS Founding Patron Wally de Backer (Gotye) said.
“So much more than an (amazing) collection of instruments, MESS pursues a mission of elevating people by encouraging creative engagement for all and creating positive community connections. Music has a unique power to affect and connect us as human beings, and MESS harnesses this power for good.”
Beyond its impressive collection of hardware, MESS offers programs, artist residencies, educational opportunities and public events that celebrate creativity and exploration in sound.
