Gordon Southern performs Free Range
Gordon Southern is a rogue. He has a name that you wouldn’t immediately associate with comedy, but when you take a look at his resume, it makes for good reading. Now in his 16th year as a stand-up, with sell-out tours on both sides of the globe, writing credits on TV and radio shows (including Ronnie Corbett), Southern is presenting his latest show, Free Range.
“I set out to just make it an hour of jokes and laughs, but themes of faith and belief have seeped in…There’s a section on jazz which also turns out to be how I want people to laugh at my jokes.. Not all at the end of the joke but at various off-beat moments, drum fills, trumpet parps etc.”
Southern last featured at MICF back in 2009 in Best Of The Fest, and is returning off the back of a successful run of shows at the Adelaide Fringe. The Adelaide Adviser noted, “Gordon is one surprise packet who through a diverse routine, wry observations and an adorable chunk of self-deprecation manages to rise above the riff raff.”
Southern is very open about his strengths; rather than relying on interactive media, he does what comedians are asked to do: “Audiences should come expecting something very funny and that they should not be afraid to get involved when I talk to them.” It plays a major part in his routine, and it is a joy to see him bouncing off the crowd. “The crowd interaction is really important, and this year’s show, has various departure points written in to it so I can improvise with the crowd, as that is exciting for everyone!”
