Going Deep With Pleasure Planet

pleasure1.jpg

Most Melbourne club nights die within three months. How have you kept Pleasure Planet going for so long?

Being a monthly party helps, but I think that we had (have?) a bit of a unique sound, as well as a focus on live art and performances, which set us apart from other things which were happening at the time.

What single track best represents PP and why?

It’s hard to pick one track because we’ve had such a variety of artists come through. I’ve personally always thought that the Giegling label is a pretty good representation; they really straddle the line between house and techno, with a lot of warm, organic sounding things, as well as a bit of weird shit every now and then. We were pretty lucky to have Konstantin, the Giegling label head, play for us last month, and he well and truly loved the party, sticking it out almost to the end. That was a truly validating experience.

What are some of the wildest things you’ve witnessed at a PP party?

There are literally too many to mention. Every party is the wildest thing I’ve seen since the one before, everyone seems to bring their A-game, whether they are artists, DJs or punters. The balcony after 9 or 10 in the morning is a sight to behold, there’s some great people watching to be had.

Who’s playing at your second birthday this Sunday?

In chronological order: Ricci, Cale Sexton (live), Beenak, Albrecht La’Brooy (live), Paul Jager and Simon TK, Voxx (live), Rat & Co, Pocosmos, Mosam Howieson (live), PWD, Dan White (live) and the prodigal son returned, Harold, to close it out.

And what about the visual artists?

Performances and live art will come from Cirque Antares, Elvis Barlow-Smith and Nick Modrzewski, The Sacred Prism, Bennyblue, Lamplight Circus and Dana Beligan

What are five tracks you can guarantee we will hear?

Ø [Phase] – Perplexed (Rødhåd Remix)

Dan White – Base 60

Bernard Xolotl and Daniel Kobilalka – Mirador

Albrecht La’Brooy – Louis

Nali – Word

24 hours is a fucking long time to party. How do you survive it? Power nap?

There are three other amazing directors involved, Brodie, Alex and Harrison, as well as a great team at Lounge, so a bit of shift work helps. It’s amazing how much energy you get from the crowd too.

What do you think will be the very first and very last song played at your second birthday?

Ricci is not of this earth, so I have no idea what he will play. The last track is still being decided; apparently I made it too hard after closing last years party with Dario G – Sunchyme. Whatever we get, it will be quality all the way through.

Reckon we’ll be having this same chat in two years time?

Hopefully we’re having a bigger one.
