Garbo, stonemason, future comedy star: Rohan Arneil is coming to Comedy Festival

Rohan Arneil
Words by Staff Writer

Rising comedy superstar Rohan Arneil is bringing Top of the Food Chain to Melbourne International Comedy Festival, fresh off a critically-acclaimed US move.

“I’m so jealous of how funny Rohan is, but I push down that feeling and I wish him well. Go see his show.” – Becky Lucas

Rohan has worked every job known to mankind. He is a former garbo, current stonemason’s apprentice, satire writer and for many years has been one of Sydney’s most impressive and quietly engaging club acts.

Rohan introduced his laconic style to international audiences in 2019. In a move to the US for double the number of gigs and a lower minimum wage, he competed as a finalist in the Funniest Person in Austin competition that year, before Covid sent him spiralling back to Sydney to work as a garbo and return to performing all around Australia.

Top of the Food Chain premiered to a sold-out audience at Sydney Fringe Festival (2023). Rohan will present his debut hour at Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2024), in collaboration with independent producer Winona Winona.

Since his return, Rohan has landed in the NSW-state finals of MICF’s RAW Comedy (2020), appeared by invitation at the legendary Comedy Store in Sydney and frequently performs at Newcastle Comedy Club (including an opening spot for Sam Taunton’s latest special!)

In August 2023, Rohan joined the Sydney Comedy Festival: Showcase Tour and premiered his highly anticipated solo show, Top of the Food Chain at Sydney Fringe the following month, to sold-out audiences over three nights.

Outside of stand-up, Rohan broadcasts weekly with Billy D’Arcy on cult hit comedy podcast Get Around Me and has been a recurring guest for many years on the who’s-who-of-Australian comedy pod The Mugg Off.

Rohan is also a writer and regular contributor to The Chaser, with his writing featured in The Chaser’s Australia book of 2016.

These jokes have been run up and down the east coast of Australia. The only crowd not to enjoy them has been middle-aged people from Cronulla, and that’s okay because Rohan doesn’t like them either.
