Today, MTV Australia announced it will be producing episodes of Grammy and Emmy award-winning MTV Unplugged this July in Melbourne, the home of live music. MTV Unplugged Melbourne will be the first of televised specials showcasing the talent on a global stage.

The first artist to feature on MTV Unplugged Melbourne is critically-acclaimed indie rock band, Gang of Youths. The episode is to be filmed with a live audience on July 25 at the Meat Market’s Cobblestone Pavilion. This performance will include a stripped back set of favourites such as hits from Go Farther in Lightness.

The first MTV Unplugged Melbourne will air later this year on MTV via Foxtel, Foxtel Now and Fetch before a full audio-visual release by just MTV Unplugged that will be available for both downloading and streaming.

MTV Unplugged debuted in 1989 and since then has continuously shed light on musical moments including performances from Nirvana, Jay-Z, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, Adele, Florence + the Machine, Oasis, The Cure and Shawn Mendes.

MTV Unplugged is one of the most famous music shows ever created and we are excited to bring it to Australia for the first time,” says Simon Bates, Vice President and Head of MTV APAC. “MTV is distributed in 790 million plus homes so it’s an exciting opportunity for Australian artists to potentially reach a new global audience. We couldn’t be more excited to kick things off with Gang of Youths, undoubtedly one of the best bands in Australia right now.”

“Melbourne is the home of live music in Australia,” adds Peter Bingeman, CEO of Visit Victoria. “We have more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the world. MTV Unplugged Melbourne will help us share our stories to new audiences, not only with regard to our music credentials, but also the neighbourhoods, restaurants, cafés, events, arts and other cultural experiences in a city full of surprises.”

Gang of Youths are becoming one of Australia’s most promising exports, winning four ARIA awards in 2017 and selling out shows across the U.K. and North America. They are to play a run of festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Splendour in the Grass not to mention how they will be supporting the Foo Fighters on their tour of the U.S. and the Foo Fighters festival Cal Jam.
