Reworlding City North transforms Carlton’s streets into a site-specific experience where players face the climate polycrisis head-on, armed with nothing but hope and the people around them. The game encourages participants to dress up in hopepunk, solarpunk or whatever costume strikes their imagination, while experienced game masters guide the action through a street filled with art, guerrilla forests, music and food.
Created by Troy Innocent and the RMIT future play lab, this collaborative event brings together Indigenous language layers from N’arweet Carolyn Briggs AM, street art from JESWRI, and ecological expertise from Gio Fitzpatrick. The game splits players into two factions – Bearbrass representing people, society and knowledge, or Symbios who’ve already moved beyond traditional human relationships with culture and environment.
To discover the future, you have to know the past
The experience layers past, present and future across Cardigan Street, with traditional Boon Wurrung language connecting players to the deep history of the land while they navigate a reimagined 2050 landscape. Players can develop custom characters through the Discord server, or rock up and grab a premade character on the day.
Part of Melbourne International Games Week and the RMIT 2025 City North Activation Challenge, the event runs across both days with single-day tickets available. The Saturday evening street party extends the action with music, discussion and community building, while the marble-based hope competition system lets participants literally find their marbles as they work towards collective solutions.
Rain or shine, the game continues with indoor backup spaces available and organisers promising to contact participants only in dangerous weather conditions. Each day includes fresh water stations and a variety of lunch options, plus every participant gets to take home a native seedling from the guerrilla forest installation.
