Funny Near The Brunny has been a beloved Brunswick comedy staple for almost 11 years and while it's no stranger to a change of venue, this move is particularly exciting.
Free entry, cheap beer and hours of laughs.
Funny Near The Brunny – a weekly comedy night featuring Australia’s best and brightest comedians – is moving into the 200-capacity Bergy Bandroom (next door to The Bergy Seltzer) and that spells a very exciting future for Melbourne’s thriving comedy scene.
Originally titled Funny At The Brunny (and hosted at the now defunct Brunswick Hotel), Funny Near The Brunny is one of Melbourne’s most popular comedy gigs, hosted by The Bergy Seltzer since the former owners of the Brunswick Hotel moved a few doors up Sydney Road.

‘I was losing sleep over who to include’: Funny Near The Brunny’s 10th anniversary showcase
The Bergy has since become a favourite drinking and comedy haunt for all northsiders in the know (not to mention the Beat team thanks to our handy proximity), but the venue really grabbed Melbourne's attention back in February by launching the 200-capacity Bergy Bandroom, allowing a range of emerging and mid-sized acts to sell out heaving gigs most weekends.
That now extends to comedy. Keen punters can expect a range of household names (Funny Near The Brunny has previously hosted the likes of Steve Hughes, Lawrence Mooney, Dave Hughes, Hung Le, Simon Taylor, Jeff Green, Dilruk Jayasinha, Luke McGregor and more) alongside the brightest young talents that Melbourne's comedy scene has to offer.
The bandroom captures the essence of everything we love about The Bergy - carpet tiles salvaged from a cricket supply store, a rustic bar made from reclaimed wood, a wooden slot car racing track as decor - so it's no surprise that it's been an incredible success. “Everyone’s amazed with what we’ve managed to do here,” co-owner David 'Frankie' Cudmore told us. “We’re trying to cater for what we would want in a venue."
Now it's time to experience it at a whole new level. To check out the upcoming gigs, head here.
