From the co-creator of The Castle, Bloom is set to be one of the funniest theatre productions this year

Bloom
Words by Staff Writer

Bloom kicks off at Arts Centre Melbourne's Playhouse from July 18 to August 19.

When the scheming owner of an aged care home Mrs MacIntyre decides to cut costs by offering uni students free board in return for them helping out as carers, she does not count on the arrival of Finn Bailey. Lazy and unqualified, Finn soon clashes with over-worked carer Ruby, before setting off a chain of events that lead to romance, rebellion… and a residents’ choir.

Working Dog’s Tom Gleisner – co-creator of some of Australia’s most beloved films (The Castle, The Dish) – injects his trademark humour into this big-hearted new musical, imagining a vision of hope and possibility for aged care. Collaborating with singer, actor and composer Katie Weston (Falling Forward, Sugartown) and directed by Dean Bryant (Fun Home), Bloom aims to remind us of the power of music to connect across generations.

In a way that only Australian satire and humour can, it takes one of our country’s most shameful recent failures – aged care – and expertly crafts a poignant vision for the future through song, story and choreography.

Starring comedian Anne Edmonds alongside Frankie J. Holden, Evelyn Krape, Vidya Makan, Maria Mercedes, Eddie Muliaumaseali’i, John O’May, Christina O’Neill, Jackie Rees and Slone Sudiro.
