Previous Secret Symphony performances have popped up in remarkable locations including the Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne Museum after dark, and at St Ali coffee roasters in South Melbourne where Bach’s Coffee Cantata was appropriately performed. The series has become known for its eclectic programming that seamlessly blends classical masterpieces by composers such as Haydn, Bach and Barber with contemporary arrangements of songs by artists like Rihanna and Radiohead.
Part of the excitement for attendees is following the trail of clues released on the dedicated Secret Symphony Instagram account (@ASecretSymphony) in the weeks leading up to each performance. Hints for the June concert will begin appearing from 24 May, teasing possible venues that might include a rooftop garden, a historic laneway, or somewhere further afield from the city centre.
The element of surprise extends beyond just the venue to include the repertoire, creating a complete mystery experience that has helped build a dedicated following for the series over its history.
Tickets for individual Secret Symphony performances are priced at $30, with a three-concert package available for $78 plus a $7 transaction fee. The accessible pricing reflects the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s commitment to bringing orchestral music to wider audiences in fresh and engaging formats.
Music lovers interested in attending are encouraged to follow the Instagram account and the hashtag #ASecretSymphony to join in the anticipation and speculation about where the MSO musicians might appear next.
