Why is Four Tet called Four Tet?

Four Tet is the stage name of Kieran Hebden, a British electronic musician and producer.

His stage name Four Tet is derived from the 1971 album 4 Tet by Dutch jazz-saxophonist Harry Verbeke, according to an interview in Eilon Paz’s book Dust & Grooves Vol.2.

He adopted the moniker in the late 1990s when he began releasing music outside of his post-rock band Fridge.

It has since become synonymous with his unique style that fuses electronic, ambient, jazz, and hip-hop influences.

What type of EDM does he play?

Four Tet’s music doesn’t fit neatly into a single EDM subgenre.

His style blends elements of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), ambient, house, techno, and UK garage. Known for experimental sounds, organic textures, and unpredictable structures, his work often crosses genre boundaries.

Albums like Rounds and There Is Love in You showcase his eclectic, melodic approach, while live sets and collaborations with artists like Burial and Skrillex explore club-friendly, bass-heavy beats.

Technically, the genre has been classified as ‘Indie electronic dance house folktronica IDM’.

Where is Four Tet based?

Four Tet is based in London, United Kingdom. He was born in Putney, South London, and has remained closely tied to the city throughout his career. London’s vibrant music scene has had a significant influence on his sound, from its experimental electronic heritage to its dynamic club culture.

While he tours internationally and collaborates with artists around the world, Hebden maintains a low-profile lifestyle in London. He often draws inspiration from the city’s diverse musical history, contributing to his unique blend of electronic, ambient, and experimental music styles.

Over the course of 2023, when Four Tet last played in Australia, he has elevated himself to legendary status, thanks to groundbreaking collaborations with the likes of Fred Again and Skrillex. These ventures have ignited a revolution in dance music, showcasing his ability to stay at the forefront of the industry’s ever-evolving landscape. It’s no wonder he’s been gracing the world’s most iconic stages, from Coachella to Madison Square Garden, and even Times Square itself.
