Architectus has been appointed to design Creative West, a transformative cultural project for Footscray.
Slated for the current Footscray Library site and adjoining carpark, Creative West will deliver a major performing arts venue, expanded library and new public open space. City of Maribyrnong is positioning the precinct as a creative and cultural cornerstone for the western suburbs.
Mayor Cr Mohamed Semra says Creative West will cement Footscray’s status as a creative neighbourhood while supporting future cultural projects across the municipality. Council is bringing the community along for the ride as the project develops.

Council’s tender process included indicative pricing for the delivery phase to understand full lifecycle costs, supporting future contract negotiations once construction funding is secured.
Back in January, the Australian Government committed $5 million through the Urban Precincts and Partnerships Program for Creative West’s planning and design, with Council matching the investment.
Creative West represents a significant step in revitalising Footscray’s cultural infrastructure. Council’s appointment of Architectus moves the project from concept to tangible design, setting the foundations for what will become a major drawcard for Melbourne’s west.
With planning and design funding locked in, the focus now shifts to developing a vision that reflects Footscray’s creative identity while meeting the community’s evolving cultural needs. The expanded library will provide enhanced community facilities, while the performing arts venue will give local and visiting artists a proper platform.
Council is prioritising community consultation throughout the design process, ensuring Creative West genuinely reflects what locals want from their cultural hub. This approach aims to create a precinct that serves both current residents and future generations.
