So then, w hat’s the band name and what do you ‘do’ in the band?
We are FLAP!, I am Jess, I play banjo-ukulele, sing, and write things. I also wear the dresses.
W hat do you reckon people will say you sound like?
People will say we sound like the ghost of a 1920s jazz dance band that travelled the world in a sequined party zeppelin, stopping off for a jam in places like Trinidad, Ye Olde England, Chile, New Orleans, Romania and Melbourne.
What do you love about making music?
Punters. Happy, smiley punters! Dancing, mirthful, lovely, laughing punters. Being paid to go to excellent festivals and make new excellent creative friends is also extremely lovely. I love free booze, too.
What do you hate about the music industry?
How undeniably important (and expensive) advertising is. There are plenty of ways to end up with bugger all coin after a sold out show!
If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?
There are a few I’d like to share a bottle with, but let’s go with Ian Dury. Dude was an excellent muckraker, a maverick renegade and cheekier than a teething toddler. His music was played a lot when in my house when I was a small person – it was always captivating in its quirkiness, lyrical cleverness and rather obvious smut.
If you could assassinate one person or band from popular music, who would it be and why?
Not really into murder in the name of poor taste, but in this case I will go for Mariah Carey. She has sold more than 200 million albums! It’s totally bananas. There must have been some kind of extensive global brain fart that decade.
What can a punter expect from your live show?
Music, mostly. Much joy and frivolity, and possibly nudity if the stars align! We’re a friendly bunch who don’t take ourselves particularly seriously, but thankfully we can all play our instruments quite well.
What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?
We have our self titled, attractively packaged first album, and our latest single Rock In Space.
When’s the gig and with who?
The gig is a Christmas Single Launch Party Extravaganza, with some extra excellent special guests on Friday December 23 at the Northcote Social Club – expect silliness.
