Experience. When I first went to LA I interned at a studio in the Valley. I would mostly load string libraries onto hard drives. It was unpaid and not particularly glamorous, but I got to see how a studio works – the engine that keeps the industry running. This experience gave me a new found respect and love for the way producers and mixers work.
Make friends. Go out and meet people who share your interests. This could lead to potential collaborations, or just a silly night out.
See live music. There are lots of talented people doing a lot of amazing things. The level of love put into a performance can be incredible and also informative to see. Plus, there’s something on every night of the week. Check out what’s on at Hotel Café. Some of the best players I’ve ever seen have been playing on smoky little stages hidden away in Hollywood. Seeing this level of performance can inspire you to incorporate new elements into your live show or recording.
Seek advice.Seek advice from other people that have moved to LA successfully. Make sure you get onto a good lawyer who can help you get the right visa, if you want to live and work there.
Chill out. Remember to take good care of yourself and live a balanced lifestyle. Going out too much can take its toll. It’s easy to burn out fast in a place like LA.
