Five Things With Tori Dunbar

Growing Up. My earliest memories were getting into my parents’ record collection and sitting on the floor surrounded by vinyls – spending hours listening to Diana Ross, Elvis, and The Beatles. Spending that time listening to those records has had a huge impact on me as a songwriter. I tend to write in that classic style of form and structure.

Inspirations. I’ve always looked up to the singing styles of Billie Holiday and Ann Wilson, classic strong female vocalists who tell stories with more than the words they sing. These women really stood out to me growing up. Hearing Billie Holidays version of Summertime was the first time I heard a raw singer with all her imperfections, it was really magical.

Your Music. My Head is my debut single, produced by Anna Laverty. We recorded it at Tender Trap Studios and mastered by Adam Dempsey at Deluxe Mastering. It’s quite an upbeat, cheeky tune where the percussiveness of both the vocal and the guitar really drives the song.

Your Show/Release. I’m very excited to be launching My Head as part of the Real Songwriters Of Melbourne showcase. I’ll also be joined onstage with a full band, which I’ve never done with my solo project so that’s a new dynamic I’ll be bringing to my current audience and sharing with my new audience.
