1. Growing Up
I went through early prototype UK hardcore through to jungle/drum and bass, then early house and garage then back to drum, and bass then strictly house music. I was given two crates of records in 1995 by a friend who worked at Camden Market selling vinyl. It was all ’88 – ’90 house music that really got me into the style for the first time. I was obsessed with all things electronic music pretty much from 1991 onwards. It has been my life ever since.
2. Inspirations
If I’m totally honest, electronic music took over me so much that the real inspirations for me were the DJs back in the ’90s. Some of them on pirate radio stations, some of them on tape packs. People like Randall, Karl Tuff Enough Brown, Doc Scott, Mike Ruffcut Lloyd, etc. These were my early inspirations for wanting to play music myself.
3. Your Crew
My closest crew are not DJs at all. I have a tight group of friends back in London that I grew up with that are my nearest and dearest. I find it hard to fully go into DJ world and just be mates with other DJs, I like to keep it real and keep my oldest friends closest to me. However, there is the Lower East and Creche family which includes Cozzy D, Michael Jansons, Johnny Mikes, Lee Brinx and others. Some seriously talented and underrated artists and DJs. I’m also good friends with loads of the more established artists, from people like Miguel Campbell and Huxley to No Artificial Colours.
4. The Music You Make
The music I make is a melting pot of all the sounds I have listened to over the last 20 years. I think it usually has emotion in it, or is drop based. I have been toying with various different styles over the past 18 months but I’ve just realised to do what I feel when in studio so now I’m focusing on letting the music ‘flow’. A lot of what I make has sweet vocals , lush chords and warm basslines.
5. Music, Right Here, Right Now
Too much rubbish out there. There’s no quality control. If you aren’t willing to put your music on vinyl maybe it shouldn’t be released at all? Having said that the scene couldn’t be healthier. The music is huge all over the world and it’s nice to see so many happy faces joining the party.
