Five Things to do at Emerge in Yarra

Submerge. This nocturnal, multimedia art show reflects on the contrasts in our modern metropolis. Featuring installation and projection artwork by Guled Abdulwasi and Aysha Tufa, music by Film School and poetry by Common Ground artists. Underground Theatre, Friday June 30, 7pm.

Black Orchid String Band. Share in a feast of West Papuan music with a special album launch – combining traditional bass, ukulele, tifa and vocal harmonies – and sample some tasty, traditional eats.Presale tickets are $10 entry or $15 with meal. Door Sales $15 entry/ $20 with meal + bf.  The Melba Spiegeltent, from 6pm.

Visible Project Showcase. The Visible Music Mentoring Program couples emerging artists from refugee and other diverse cultural backgrounds with established artists, to exchange ideas and create new music. Featuring Neil Morris, Semina, Kaiit Waup and more. Grumpy’s Green, Sunday July 2, 6pm.

Cookin’ Up Community. Over two nights, explore a collaboration of food, music and stories. On Tuesday July 4 at Collingwood Community Kitchen, Neda Rahmani’s Persian and Mauritian roots combine with Ethiopian cuisine. On Wednesday July 5 at Fitzroy Community Food Kitchen, Chilean theatre director Jaime Wilson-Ramirez and Colombian singer/songwriter Oscar Jimenez will cook up stories, songs and snacks. Both nights start at 7pm, entry is $10 or $15 for concessions.

Osono: Our Culture. Osono is an exciting new work which sees a dynamic fusion of Aboriginal and West African dance, movement, rhythm and vocals. You’ll run the gamut of emotions with this striking performance. Entry is $15 or $10 for concession and kids under 12 for free. Richmond Theaterette. Friday July 7, 6.30pm.
