Five Melbourne gigs to check out over the Queen’s Birthday weekend

Party like a true royal.

Lake Minnetonka at Geddes Lane Ballroom

Paying tribute to one of the greatest superheroes and musicians of all time, Geddes Lane Ballroom presents Royal Funk Party: Batdance!, an event celebrating the 30th anniversary of Tim Burton’s Batman and the birthday of dearly departed Prince. Headlining the event will be funk group Lake Minnetonka, playing a mix of Prince covers, tracks from the Batman soundtrack, as well as some of their own tunes. Wilson & White at The Drunken Poet

For a night of foot-stomping original blues music, head on down to The Drunken Poet to witness duo Troy Wilson and Matthew White work their magic. These acoustic artists will take you right back to where it all began, making use of resonator guitars, kazoos, stomp-boxes and washboards. Want to catch Wilson & White in the flesh? Leading Lights at Wesley Anne

Hosting the second ever Leading Lights concert series, MAXON will be performing her latest single ‘History’, alongside an array of other talents showcasing their extraordinary musical prowess. Gracing the stage alongside MAXON are Bec Sykes, STAV, Benjamin Trillado, Ruby Whiting and Taylah Carroll. The Mercy Kills at Bombay Rock

Returning from overseas, The Mercy Kills are back to launch their brand new single ‘Black Out’ at Bombay Rock. They’ll be joined by special guests Kvlts of Vice and Vicious Addiction for a long night of hardcore rockin’ out and tunes that will be stuck in your head for weeks. The Mercy Kills have also pressed a limited number of CDs especially for the event, so arrive early to get your hands on one. Catch them Friday June 14. Entry is free. More information here.

Honey Hayze at Northcote Social Club

This Saturday June 8, the Northcote Social Club is hosting Bondi Beach six-piece group Honey Hayze on their national Afternoon tour. Joining them around along the east coast are mangy Melbourne hard rockers Sordid Ordeal, bringing their ferocious performance to the forefront. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 3pm.
