Fed Square is bringing Middle-earth to Melbourne with a three-night Lord of the Rings marathon happening late December.
Running from Saturday 27 to Monday 29 December, Fed Square will screen The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – Extended Editions for free across three epic outdoor cinema nights. It’s a rare opportunity for fans and first-timers to catch the full expanded versions of Peter Jackson’s landmark fantasy trilogy on the big screen in the heart of the city, right under the summer stars.
One of the most ambitious film projects ever made, the trilogy was famously shot in one continuous production and dropped annually on Boxing Day for three years from 2001 to 2003. These screenings celebrate its lasting cultural impact while giving audiences the complete extended cuts, each shown in full with a 15-minute intermission.

Each Fed Square evening delivers one film in its full extended glory, offering way more Middle-earth than the original cinema releases ever showed. Gather your fellowship for this outdoor cinema journey through the legendary tale of Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn and the Fellowship of the Ring as they battle the forces of darkness in Jackson’s monumental take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy masterpiece.
Shot entirely in one go and released across three consecutive Boxing Days, this massive summer blockbuster trilogy earned praise from fans and critics for staying true to the source material. Its stratospheric financial and critical success gets credit for dragging the fantasy epic back into mainstream cinema while cementing New Zealand’s Peter Jackson as an A-list director and putting the country’s film and special effects industry on the global map.
What’s a quest without proper provisions? Themed food truck Bilbo Snaggins will be onsite throughout serving up gourmet grilled hotdogs and drinks worthy of a hobbit’s appetite. ACMI’s snack bar will set up near the ACMI entrance in the upper square during each screening, stocked with choc tops, drinks, fresh popcorn and other treats. From second breakfasts to elevenses, there’s fuel for every adventurer.
All films at Fed Square include burnt-in closed captions for accessibility.
