Enjoy bite-sized bliss at the Melbourne International Dumpling Festival

Dumpling Festival
words by kaya martin

Dough + filling = pure magic.

There’s something so joyful about biting into a dumpling. Personally, I think it’s all about the mystery – you can’t tell what’s concealed beneath the soft, pillowy dough until you take a big ol’ bite. Is it minced meat and spices? Black sesame and sugar? Ricotta and spinach? Only time will tell.

It seems there are many who share my opinion about the delight of dumplings because almost every culture has its own variation. Deep-fried samosas, boiled-and-pan-fried pierogies, and juicy steamed xiao long bao may seem like they’re worlds apart, but on March 22, they’ll be brought together under one roof as punters gather to celebrate the beloved snack at the return of the Melbourne International Dumpling Festival.

Whether you’re on the hunt for manti, momo, mandu, or matzo balls, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the QVM. Already known for being a multicultural culinary meeting place, the market will make the perfect host for vendors to show off what they’ve got, especially with the Society of Language and Culture (Solangture) directing the show.

What better way is there to learn about new cultures than by taste-testing some dumpling deliciousness? There will also be roving entertainment, multicultural performances and activities for kids to keep you and your crew busy between bites.

Tickets to the dumpy-fest are free with online registration, so bring a few friends and a healthy appetite and prepare for a fun-filled day of dough.
