Harvey Sutherland is launching his Amethyst / I Can See double A-side at the recently refurbished and reopened Geddes Lane venue this week, with a sold-out show on Friday November 30 and a second show added on Thursday. Sutherland’s been a consistent player in the Melbourne disco scene over the last five or so years, evolving from a solo producer rocking intimate club crowds with his laptop and Juno synth, to forming a festival-ready virtuoso band called Bermuda – wooing crowds with live violin and drums. Now working with an entirely new group of players after recording the jazz broken-beat/disco odyssey ‘Amethyst’ in London, Sutherland’s ready to take the next leap in his career. If disco’s not really your thing, Sleep D and their long-time Japanese friend Kuniyuki AKA Koss are putting on an experimental ambient night at Hugs&Kisses on Thursday November 29, courtesy of hosts ONO. Over the last few years, Kuni’s developed a special relationship with Melbourne and Sleep D in particular. Mastering their records and touring with them both here and in Japan, it’s a connection that continues to grow. The night will feature two live performances; a solo set from Kuniyuki, then a live improvisation alongside Maryos and Corey of Sleep D. Kicks off at 8pm.
Belfast duo Bicep have announced their Melbourne sideshow from the Let Them Eat Cake NYD festival, going down on Friday January 4 at 170 Russell. Bicep have been riding a wave of success after their 2017 debut album, leading an evolution in the dance music scene – a move away from over-used house beats and sounds towards less repetitive songs structures, break-beats and more melodic trance influenced synth lines. After three sold-out shows at London’s enormous Printworks venue last week, it’s no surprise that early bird tickets to this show sold out in under an hour. I wouldn’t be surprised if general release tickets sold out shortly too, so get in quick.
