Electronic: the long weekend kicks off on Thursday at Hugs&Kisses, and Netherlands house producer Malin Genie is coming to Howler

Long weekend time, aww yeah. That means we’ve got a bunch more parties than usual on Thursday night. Hugs&Kisses are hosting a Lobster Theremin label showcase with Amsterdam producer Nthng, UK label head Asquith, local lad Daze, DJ Heure over from Adelaide and Lou Karsh doing a live set. That’s a solid lineup of crispy house and acid if I’ve ever seen one.

Over at Brown Alley, Smalltown is back with a couple of Europe’s finest: Oliver Huntemann and Charlotte de Witte. Although only 25 years old, De Whitte’s DJ career has already spanned eight years and her relentless approach to techno has taken her to festivals like Pukkelpop, I Love Techno, Dour and Tomorrowland.

Up northside at Howler, The Operatives and Audiopaxx are throwing down with beatmakers Yahtzel, Akouo, Tentendo and Nam. Prepare ya guts for some bass.

On Friday, the NGV has synth-funkers GL performing as part of their Friday Nights series with Jaala doing a DJ set for support duties. I frequently wake up with a GL song stuck in my head, and you know what? Not even mad. They’ve got some of the catchiest jams around, get ready for a boog. Oh and tickets include after-hours exhibition entry to The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture if that’s your thing.

Over at Boney, Lifeworld is hosting Netherlands house producer Malin Genie. Founder of Vigenere, Co-founder of Oscillat and member of Mandar, Genie is a purveyor of the deep, the funky, the playful, the obscure, and all things worth dancing to. On support duties is
Billus Moon, DJ Soup and Dan Fabris.

On Saturday, Detroit techno don Kevin Saunderson is back. As one of the originators of Detroit techno alongside Juan Atkins and Derrick May, his influence on modern dance music can’t be understated. No stranger to our shores, the 54-year-old hits XE54 with local queen of techno DJ Kiti.

Up at 24 Moons, it’s Cool Room time. For their September instalment, they’re hosting a Western Australian takeover, showcasing talent from 3000km across the Nullarbor. Camp Doogs is a cornerstone of the community over there, bringing punters together to dance in a “sonic bushland of interstellar treats.” Their signature sunrise rave, Deep Doogs, is a highlight of the weekend, and they’ve fetched some of their finest regulars for this Melbourne appearance: Consulate, Tourist Kid, DJ Aldi and Toni Yotzi.
