Couple of weird bits of news to kick off this week’s column: ironically on-trend Italian fashion brand Gucci have announced they are collaborating with London-based publication, Frieze, to showcase a series of arty-farty films that explore the social and political influence of acid house. What the hell an overpriced Italian luxury brand has to do with a scene that was rooted in the lower-class neighbourhoods of Chicago is beyond me, but pop ‘Frieze’ in your Google machine to see some previews.
Secondly, it looks like we’re getting a posthumous Avicii album, pretty soon in fact. Swedish magazine Afterbladet reported his family “met record company representatives and partners and agree that an album will be released before the end of the year.” Whether or not the album was intended for release by Avicii or if it’s being finished by other producers has not been noted.
In Melbourne this Friday, hyped lo-fi house label Steel City Disco Discs are throwing a party at Lounge with Serbian/US producer X-Coast for his debut Australian tour. Describing himself as ‘Riviera House’, X-Coast is the soundtrack to your European vacation. Backing him up are locals Nite Fleit and Gino Pozzi. Apparently, Nite Fleit’s debut EP is just about ready and will be released on SCDD later this year, expect to hear some of it at this party. Kicks off at 11pm.
German producer/DJ Florian Kupfer is back to play Boney this Saturday. Known for pumping emotive electro, lo-fi house, techno and leftfield oddities, Kupfer is a regular to Australia and a much-loved one at that. Backing him up is Ballarat native and OG lo-fi house-head Daze, who’s been a tad quiet this year after an enormous 2017 – good to see him getting out and about again. Also on board is a new DJ duo called Purecloud made up of long-time friends Rudolf C and Silentspook. Kicks off at 1pm.
