The days are getting longer and the parties are starting to stack up, shit yeah Melbourne. On Thursday September 14, Section 8’s weekly collaborative night between beat enthusiasts The Operatives and 100% Phat, The Drop is back again this time featuring Hijack, Rui, Maars and Rintrah. Free entry as always.
On Friday, Alleycat is finishing up their four-part winter series with a banger of a lineup. Heading it up is everyone’s favourite Lobster Theremin alumni Daze and Rings Around Saturn doing a live set. Rings around Saturn has just been announced for Meredith Music Festival so if you wanna check him out before getting loose in the ‘sup here’s your chance. Rounding out the lineup is Donald and Turner Street Sound. It’s at their usual haunt, 420 Lonsdale St in the city, kicks off at 10pm.
Also on Friday, Stranger is back at Brown Alley, this time presenting one of the masters of brooding dystopian textural techno Shifted. Guy Brewer’s Shifted moniker has grown into a unique and encompassing mastery of sound and space, from his debut on Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver label, to his recent recordings for his own smartly curated imprint, Avian, Brewer has become one of the most respected vibe gatekeepers in the world. Local support comes from Nite Fleit, ACM, Machete, Laura King, Tom Mohr b2b Patrick Stokes, Gestalt and Jono Brayshaw. Kicks off at 10pm.
If you’re in the mood for something more melodic on Friday, Alter and Warg are presenting US producer Layton Giordani at Royal Melbourne Hotel. Working his way through the circumference of house, tech-house and techno, there’s a reason Giordana has quickly gained a following and radio play from the likes of BBC Radio 1 and Carl Cox’s Global Radio Show.
On Saturday, it’s the first day party of the season with local disco queen CC:Disco and UK DJ/producer/label-head Red Rack’em throwing down at Friends of Friends at Thousand Pound Bend. This space seems to not get utilised enough in my opinion and hopefully this summer sees some more debauchery there. Local support comes from Ollie Holmes, Dan Bentley, Edgework, Andrew Crabb, The Milkman and Finn OD, kicks off at 2pm.
In the evening on Saturday, synthwave wizard Luke Million is in Melbourne for his Come Together tour, on the back of his new EP of the same name. After a 19-date national tour with Client Liaison and his appearance at Splendour In The Grass being touted as a highlight by many, I reckon his live set is gonna be on point. It goes down at Howler with support from Mookhi and Nocturnal Tapes.
