Electric Shorts

What is your festival about?

Electric Shorts is a festival of independent short films. Twelve short films by Australian and overseas filmmakers will be screened. The films cover diverse subject matter, style and genre. There will be experimental films, straight-up narrative, music, animation, and more. All the films have been funded fully by the filmmakers.

What motivated you to put this event on?

It’s not often these days that every film in a film festival – large, small, mainstream, even alternative – is truly independent. This spirit of artists doing it for themselves is what drives Electric Shorts, founded and coordinated by director Jim Stamatakos, to inspire filmmakers to do what they’re passionate about and to get their work out there.

What  aspect of Electric Shorts  are you proudest of?

The sheer diversity of work that will be shown – in terms of themes, style, genre and cultural context. There are not only films by Australian filmmakers which present unique perspectives on our own culture, but there are also films by Columbian, Iranian and Russian filmmakers presenting their take on those cultures, making Electric Shorts a truly cosmopolitan event.

What should a punter expect from these films?

The films will compel, challenge, excite, entertain, shock, provide insight, elicit empathy and possibly, lead to catharsis – everything films can do, but often don’t. After the screenings, there’ll be plenty of time for filmmakers and audience to engage in a bit of dialogue and possibly even debate over a drink or two.

How does your show explore Fringe’s theme of stepping into the light?

Cinema is all about stepping into the light, and into shadow for that matter. Electric Shorts provides the audience with the opportunity to do just that.
