Electric Fields team up with the MSO for one-off Melbourne show this NAIDOC Week

Electric Fields
Words by Talia Rinaldo

Electric Fields' unique fusion of First Peoples culture and electro pop meet orchestra in this one-night-only concert with the MSO.

In one of the most fiercely optimistic collaborations of the year, award-winning electronic music duo and self-described ‘feminine brothers’ Electric Fields are taking their already epic sounds to new heights with an orchestral treatment with the MSO for NAIDOC Week.

Their first-time collaborating with the MSO, the vibrant and moving concert will see Zaachariaha Fielding (vocals) and Michael Ross (keyboard/producer), aka Electric Fields, and the MSO perform song cycles of the duo’s effervescent, electronic neo-soul work, arranged for orchestra by the MSO’s 2022 Cybec Young Composer in Residence, Alex Turley.

Combining pop, soul and electronica with intimate storytelling, the brilliant duo’s music, described as ‘emotionally moving and breathtaking’, and ‘Daft Punk meets Nina Simone in the Deep Forest’. Inspiring in every way, they embrace their queerness while Zaachariaha’s extraordinary vocals often include the traditional languages of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara people. His dancing is also an integral part of the live show, as he becomes the spirit creature for audiences who ‘let their freak flag fly’.

“We are so honoured to have our pop and dance tracks orchestrated for a one night only performance with the MSO,” said Michael Ross.

“Woven into the evening will be traditional songs drawing through the root systems of Zaachariaha’s community, creating a sonic Milky Way from the desert sands.”

Promising to deliver stadium-level joy to audience members at Hamer Hall, the rare and beautiful voice of Zaachariaha Fielding and the brilliance of composer and producer Michael Ross have made a name for themselves in recent years, headlining large festivals throughout Australia, Asia, New Zealand, the UK and Europe. Australian shows include Splendour in the Grass, APRA, Apple, Spotify and Vogue’s 60th Anniversary, and playing live for the AFL Grand Final.

They’ve notched six National Live Music Awards (including two wins for Fielding for Best Voice and Best Live Act) and were finalists for a recent ARIA Award for Best Live Act.

Performing their music in full bloom, Electric Fields’ melodies, harmonies, rhythms and lyrics will be sonically painted live by the limitless textures of the most profound musical organism. Presented in association with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, this special once-in-a-lifetime performance will also feature conductor Aaron Wyatt, a Noongar man who made history in February as the first Aboriginal man to conduct the MSO or any other state orchestra in Australia and music supervisor Benjamin Northey, who will further ensure moments of breathtaking beauty and power are brought to the stage.

Electric Fields and the MSO will perform on Thursday, July 7 at 8:30pm at Hamer Hall, Melbourne. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.
