Eden Krumins aka DJ Cubist is a pretty switched on guy. Not only the man behind the Wobble parties, but also a cellist and general music lover music flows through his blood. "I did music at school," he says. "I played cello and did a music degree on that. But I was always into the funkier side of things music wise. Groups like Parliament, George Clinton, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, NWA – it was very diverse. Then at high school I heard drum and bass from a friend who had just got back from the UK and I just fell in love with it. It was the most exciting thing in my life. It still is."
Indeed, the journey has taken him far and wide – to the extent that now he and his partners in crime run the Wobble night on the third Saturday of every month at the Night Owl in Melbourne. He goes on: "Wobble started between myself and Derek Heartical nearly four years ago. He built the sound system we use at Wobble – Heartical Hi Fi! It’s a traditional style Jamaican sounds system." And for the uninitiated, that means lots and lots of bass!
Eden recalls coming back from the UK and experiencing proper sound systems like Irration Steppas and Valve. So his main goal was to bring some proper sound to Melbourne. "When you get drum and bass or dubstep on a proper sound system there really isn’t anything like it. It’s like when you get bass and really put pressure on your chest and your vision gets blurred! It’s simply a serious experience. It’s like all your troubles in the world disappear. And time just stops."
Likewise, the local lineup at Wobble is about supporting local artists. The crew rarely does international artists. And they claim that nearly every DJ of note in these genres have played Wobble some time or another. "For us, making music for me is just sort of therapy – an escape from reality. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Some days the tunes just flow. So in a way I have to be motivated from leaving the studio. I live down on the coast so I spend a lot of time surfing and being outdoors. For me, it’s a nice balance. If I get up and go surfing, I can calm the physical side of myself. All my muscles and my nerves relax. Then I can spend the whole day in the studio."
"And that’s it for me – just tunes man! I’ve completed nearly 100 tunes now that haven’t been released. And nearly all the ones I do, I send out to DJs such as Grooverider or DJ Hype get support. So my focus now is directly on my label, which has been in the pipeline for a while now. The Label is called Colours. My sound is a bit different to what other labels are pushing too – I’m not following trends. I’m staying true to my musical influences and beliefs, which are pretty simple. I record all my own drums and spend a lot of time on the details of getting each individual part as loud and tough as I can. It’s a bit of an obsession. I’m highly influenced by labels from the 90’s such as Full Cycle. My first release is due in about 8 weeks. It’s got distribution from ST Holdings in the UK for vinyl and digital."
Finally, Eden is pumped for the forthcoming boat party, which he reckons is going to be, in a word, big! "I can guarantee that Wobble is putting the biggest sound system to date on that boat! It’s over two levels with drum and bass and dubstep. Some of the best DJs and emcees that have ever played Wobble over the years will be there. It’s going to be magical. It’s guaranteed to be an experience not to be missed. If you have been to Wobble you know the drill and there’s no need to explain. It’s concentrated energy man, with sound with artists with lighting and decor. No compromise!"
