Eddy Current Suppression Ring will play a massive free Melbourne show at Fed Square on the Friday before the AFL Grand Final on 26 September.
The legendary Melbourne underground band will return to the stage after a 15-year hiatus for their first-ever free show on the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 26 September. The all-ages event marks Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s first major Melbourne appearance since their last headline show at The Palace in 2010 and their first Victorian show since a legendary headlining slot at Golden Plains in 2016.
“Eddy Current Suppression Ring is a band woven into the fabric of Melbourne’s music history. Raw, fearless and utterly electrifying live,” said Fed Square Director of Programming Sarah Tutton. “We’re delighted to welcome them back to the city for what promises to be a truly unforgettable night at Fed Square, continuing our commitment to creating unmissable free, all-ages events that celebrate the best of local and international music, right in the heart of Melbourne.”

Formed in 2003 after a spontaneous jam session at a Melbourne vinyl pressing plant Christmas party, Eddy Current Suppression Ring became one of Australia’s most influential underground bands. Their stripped-back sound and fiercely DIY ethos produced critically acclaimed records including Primary Colours, which won the Australian Music Prize in 2008, and Rush to Relax, which cracked the ARIA Top 20 in 2010.
The announcement follows the lightning-fast sell-out of the band’s new split seven-inch Shapes and Forms, released earlier this month. Their last Melbourne performance was a brief reunion run in 2016 that included an iconic set at Golden Plains and a last-minute appearance at Hobart’s Dark Mofo.
Support comes from New York’s EDAN, described as a true original MC and producer known for flipping golden-era hip hop into psychedelic beat odysseys. Melbourne duo Wrong Way Up will open with their genre-blurring mix of afro-disco, 70s synth-funk and electronic experimentation.
The show adds to Fed Square’s growing legacy as a live music venue, following memorable free performances from artists including Robbie Williams, Kneecap, Caribou and Glass Beams.
