EastEnd Cabaret : Perverts

Perverts by EastEnd Cabaret is one bloody hilarious show. The antics of the ‘deviant diva’ Bernadette Byrne, and her accompanist Victor/Victoria (‘half-moustachioed weirdo’) are outrageous but their songs are something else altogether. Songs called Accidental Anal, for example, or Dangerwank. These two are so polished and so rude that you’re laughing and gasping at the same time.

It’s incredibly good fun, surprising and musically accomplished, just what you want in a cabaret. With keyboards and a loop machine they make an electric musical number out of sex noises – this is much funnier than you’d think and probably should go in Eurovision, like they suggest. Yet it’s not even the highlight of the show, that comes later via a marvellously sick story about – no, I won’t spoil it but the duo stretch it to the ninth degree, they wring every laugh possible out of it and you’re still wanting more.

EastEnd Cabaret’s style of audience interaction reminds me of performances by Meow Meow or Sarah Ward. A lot of the laughs are at the expense of a hapless male audience member – Bernadette makes her entrance riding on a man beast and gets two blokes up on stage. Another fellow gets to share the stage with Herself and many of the guffaws come from watching him try to get away. Crikey once described EastEand Cabaret as ‘a high-powered feminine Flight of the Conchords dipped in acid and drenched in smut.’ That would be right.
