A collaborative album rooted in community
The pair have been circling each other’s creative worlds for more than a decade, racking up collaborations across both catalogues. MIKE appeared on Earl Sweatshirt and The Alchemist’s record Voir Dire, while Earl featured on MIKE’s 2020 album Weight of the World. POMPEII // UTILITY marks the first time both artists have fully embedded themselves in the SURF GANG universe — a full-circle collision of interconnected scenes finally converging on one project.
The recently released lead double single Minty // Earth offers an early window into what’s coming. At its core, POMPEII // UTILITY embodies a shared creative philosophy — collaboration as community-building. The project draws on African and diasporic traditions where storytelling and art are collective, iterative and relational, with every element of the record kept deliberately within the extended creative family.
Two of hip-hop’s sharpest pens
Earl Sweatshirt emerged at just 16 from the Odd Future collective, quickly establishing himself as one of his generation’s most gifted lyricists. His storytelling, vulnerability and raw poetic instinct have earned a devoted global following, with his 2025 album Live, Laugh, Love continuing that trajectory. Earl last played Melbourne in 2023 with a captivating headline set at Northcote Theatre that reminded fans why his live shows are unmissable.
New York-born MIKE, who cites Earl as one of his largest inspirations, made an explosive debut with 2017 mixtape MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE. He followed it with the acclaimed tears of joy in 2019 and delivered one of 2025’s standout records with the incisive Showbiz!
With a shared history spanning more than 10 years and a brand new collaborative record dropping just weeks before the tour, this Melbourne date shapes up as essential for anyone invested in hip-hop’s more adventurous corners. It’s been a strong stretch for international hip-hop in Melbourne, with the city continuing to attract some of the genre’s most respected names. The Timber Yard, nestled in Port Melbourne’s growing live music precinct, provides the ideal setting for what promises to be one of the year’s most anticipated shows.
