Dr. Watson’s Comedy Soul Lounge is a monthly comedy night at Bella Union at Trades Hall. Comedy Soul Lounge compare and comedian Lucy Watson explains why and how The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is better than Christmas.
What inspired you to start up a comedy night?
“I moved to London in 2005 and a lot of the comedy nights sucked. I started a night in London with only a handful of great acts getting 10-15 minutes each. Audiences really enjoyed the nights and kept coming back. When I came home last year, I thought putting on a comedy night would be a good way of getting back into the scene and reconnecting with my old pals. I wanted to run a monthly comedy night as a springboard for MICF. It’s a great chance for acts to publicise their shows and audiences to see some great local acts.”
Which comedian are you looking forward to playing Dr. Watson’s Comedy Soul Lounge?
“I’m very excited to have Lawrence Leung performing on Wednesday March 30 at The Bella Union. I’m hoping to hit up some of the bigger names at the bar and see if I can get them to come down! You never know, hey?”
What do you love most about MICF?
“April is my favourite time in Melbourne. It’s like Christmas for comedians. Great acts from all over the world come and perform and you get to rub shoulders with them. We are so lucky to have this platform on our doorstep. Many of my friends are in comedy and it’s great to have a whole month where we hang out, drink and talk comedy.”
Dr Watson’s Comedy Soul Lounge happens at The John Curtin Hotel on Wednesday April 6 and Wednesday April 13 at 9pm. Tickets are only $10 and you can buy them at the door.
