Double Opa Featuring Opa Bato! and Estudiantina of Melbourne combines fast-paced Serbian brass with multi-cultural Mediterranean music.
Opa Bato! represents Australia’s only trubacki orkestar, delivering authentic contemporary Balkan brass music from Serbia, Macedonia and beyond under the leadership of composer Dushan Mitrovic. Double Opa Featuring Opa Bato! and Estudiantina of Melbourne pairs this frenetic brass energy with the rich cultural tapestry of Estudiantina of Melbourne’s Greek, Turkish, Jewish and Armenian influences.
Founded in 2009 with their debut at Forum Theatre, Opa Bato! has since performed at Melbourne International Jazz Festival, High Vibes Music Festival, Darebin Music Feast and Antipodes Hellenic Festival. Their music draws from European and Oriental traditions, creating fast, frenetic and compellingly danceable performances that showcase the unique fusion inherent in Balkan brass traditions.

Estudiantina of Melbourne translates to students of Melbourne, reflecting their role as cultural ambassadors for Mediterranean musical traditions. Using instruments including oud, bouzouki, violin, kanun, accordion and guitar, they weave performances that connect generations, cultures and communities through shared musical heritage.
Both ensembles specialise in music that serves as cultural bridges, with Opa Bato! showcasing Serbian and Macedonian brass traditions while Estudiantina explores the diaspora experience through Mediterranean sounds. Together they represent Melbourne’s multicultural musical landscape, celebrating traditions that have found new life in Australian contexts.
Performance history includes major festival appearances and community celebrations, establishing both groups as essential representatives of their respective cultural traditions within Australia’s broader music scene.
