Don McLean brings the American Pie 55th Anniversary Tour to Melbourne

Don McLean
words by staff writer

Don McLean is heading back to Australia this October for a run of shows celebrating one of the most iconic songs ever written.

More than five decades on from its release, Don McLean’s American Pie remains one of the most recognised and discussed compositions in popular music.

Released in 1971, it reshaped what a song could be and has never really left the cultural conversation since. That McLean is still out here touring it, at 81, with the voice and presence to back it up, says everything about why this run of dates matters.

A Don McLean show has always been about more than one song, though.

His catalogue stretches across decades of melodic, reflective songwriting, with Vincent (Starry Starry Night), Castles in the Air and And I Love You So among the highlights.

He brings a storyteller’s instinct to the live experience too, sharing the history and context behind the music as the night unfolds. For anyone who has carried these songs through life, that kind of intimacy is hard to come by.

Few artists at any stage of their career can claim a body of work this enduring, and fewer still can deliver it with the warmth and clarity McLean brings to the stage. For some in the audience, this will be a chance to reconnect with songs that have soundtracked entire lifetimes. For others, it may be the first and only opportunity to see one of songwriting’s most influential figures perform in person.

Presale opens 10am local time, 27 March, running until 11pm 30 March. General on sale from 9am local time, 31 March.
