Docklands’ underground church dome transforms into laser-filled synth experience

docklands zabelin
words by staff writer

Nikita Zabelin brings modular synthesis and lasers to Mission to Seafarers in Docklands for one night in the underground dome.

Ever wondered what modular synthesis sounds like in a bunker 43 metres underground? Or inside a centuries-old church dome beneath Melbournes Docklands? Moscow-based artist Nikita Zabelin has been finding out, and now GROUND is landing at Mission to Seafarers on Friday, 24 October.

GROUND isn’t your standard gig. White light and lasers fill the underground church dome while Zabelin works a modular synthesiser, building layers of sound that shift between chaos and quiet moments. It’s an hourlong experience that moves through intensity and stillness, stripping back the usual live show format to focus on evolving textures and sonic precision. Less spectacle, more environment.

Electronic musician, DJ and producer Nikita Zabelin has spent years working across Europe’s music scene through radio projects, festival appearances and collaborations. His approach to sound has made him a recognisable name in electronic music circles, particularly for pushing boundaries with how performances can work. Zabelin invites deep listening, with each sonic element crafted to pull audiences inward rather than overwhelm them.

GROUND has been presented at European art festivals including Portugal’s LUZA and Berlin’s LOST, as well as more unusual locations like a bunker 43 metres underground. The performance has also appeared alongside Greenpeace initiatives, exploring connections between sound, community, science and environmental issues.

GROUND has travelled through European art festivals including Portugal’s LUZA and Berlin’s LOST, popping up in everything from bunkers to Greenpeace collaborations exploring connections between sound, community and environmental awareness.

Docklands Mission to Seafarers’ subterranean dome is the latest unusual venue on that list, offering an atmospheric space for Zabelin’s blend of light, sound and contemplation. Doors open at 8:30pm with the show running from 9pm to 10pm.
