The Old Treasury Building is one of the finest nineteenth century buildings in Australia. Along with Parliament House, it represents the grandeur and confidence that was Melbourne in the 1850s.
Young Public Works Department architect J.J. Clark chose a Renaissance Revival style for his Treasury building, built initially to store the gold flooding into Melbourne from the gold fields.
Bluestone vaults occupy the basement of the building, while gracious rooms on upper floors were offices for the Governor, Premier, Treasurer and other important government officials.
Today the Old Treasury Building is a history museum. Visitors are welcome to visit the gold vaults and the exhibits housed in the beautiful rooms on the ground floor.
