Located upstairs at Classic Cinemas, Classic Southside showcases a range of jazz music and intimate performances.
Created with the aim of filling a lamentable gap in the cultural landscape south of Melbourne, Classic Southside provides a space for audiences to enjoy music, film and other kinds of performance. It simultaneously acts as an intimate venue for southside-based artists to exhibit their work closer to home. Classic Southside showcases jazz music every Friday and Saturday, programmed by Sonny Rehe, owner of Fitzroy’s Uptown Jazz Café. There are fortnightly cult VHS screenings by CineCultVHS, purveyors of lost films, ephemera and everything wild, weird and wonderfully analogue.
Finally, the venue works closely with social enterprise South of the City (SOC) to bring diverse programming to this side of the Yarra. Comedy and spoken word performance nights organised by SOC, Talkbox and Big Night In alternate each week on Tuesday nights. There are also occasional one-off gigs, EP launches and more to be discovered on the remaining nights of the week.
