Scotty, as she’s affectionately known, is following her hit show
The questions, “What if…?”, or its evil twin, “If only…” are the types of thoughts that can torment one in the pre-dawn dark. They can nestle in, deep in hidden pockets of the soul, and niggle for a whole lifetime. Denise Scott has the one distinct advantage from most other people, in that she can turn her regrets into comedy gold.
Scotty, as she’s affectionately known, is following her hit show, All That Happened At Number 26 – which began life as a memoir and then performed as part of the 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and, due to popular demand, returned for more sold-out shows last year – with another trademark autobiographical show.
This new show is called Regrets. She says it won’t be too theatrical, just her at a mic. “I’m in a lovely frock, and that’s it. I’m telling a story. Although I do show off a new skill at the end of the show. In Number 26, that was tap dancing, but this is another new skill, which is something I learned just before doing the show in Brisbane.”
She doesn’t want to give away too much about the content, but she promises the regret “is a sexy one. Then the story goes into an event that happened whilst touring on Comedy Festival Roadshow, and I like to call it ‘an awakening’. It’s very Oprah,” she deadpans, on a break from filming televisions series Winners And Losers at Docklands Studios. “Yeah, but there wasn’t a lot of dignity involved, let’s say that,” she adds.
The story of the show spans her lifetime. “The sexy regret is from when I’m 16, so that’s one side of the story, and the other is what happens on Roadshow two years ago. I’ve shoe-horned them to link, as you do”. She drops her voice menacingly, “I’ll make this motherfucker link,” she laughs. “I’ll make this story fit this one if it kills me”. Knowing Denise Scott, she’ll have her audience killing themselves laughing.
Denise Scott performs Regrets at The Victoria Hotel’s Banquet Room from March 31 – April 24. It’s at 8.15pm Tuesday – Saturday and 7.15pm on Sundays. Tickets are $22 – $30 and available through Ticketmaster, 1300 660 013 and at the door.
