Why celebrate the ‘Day of the Dead’?

We celebrate the day of the dead as one of the biggest traditions in Mexican culture. It has been a tradition since the time of the Aztec civilization to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Therefore in all Mexican towns and homes, the preparations start early in October. At Los Amates, we give our customers the opportunity to be in Mexico for a little while and celebrate the Mexican traditions right here in Melbourne.

What happens on a traditional ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations?

In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time for welcoming the spirits. Preparation take weeks and the entire family and community get involved in this deep and meaningful tradition. The building of intricate and ornate altars, the making of specialty foods and candies, candle making and gift wrapping, the arrangement of flowers [and] cleaning of family grave sites are only one tiny part of the traditional arrangements that take place.

What can we expect at Los Amates Mexican Kitchen on Friday November 4?

Friday November 4 will be a Friday that people will never forget. The restaurant will be decorated with amazing skulls, Catrinas and deadly ornaments. The spectacle will be adorned by our lovely traditional altar and for the first time our own rock ‘n’ roll hall of fame, where Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison and others will be invited for dinner. With the sounds of our Mexican DJs and traditional band – Los Amates invites the spirits to come party.

Recently Mexican cuisine has become very popular in Melbourne, why is it so bueno?

Melbourne has been more aware of the exciting flavours of Mexican food for the last five years. Every year more and more Australians venture into the rich lands of Mexico, where they discover that Mexican food is much more than what they knew before. Los Amates is proud to have been part of this revolution.
