Dating stories by candlelight in a Carlton wine bar? This stand-up Fringe show has you covered

words by staff writer

Taking the saying "we'll laugh at this someday" to a whole new level.

(Platonic) power couple Sweeney Preston & Jodie Sloan invite you to an intimate evening where they will wine and dine you, figuratively speaking, with tales of modern courtship.

A collision of stand-up, songs, and PowerPoint comedy, Friends With Detriments is set to take place at Jimmy Watson’s Wine Bar from October 17 to 22.

Friends With Detriments

  • Where: The Snack Monster (part of Jimmy Watson’s Wine Bar), Carlton
  • When: October 17 – 22

The show is a rollercoaster of cheeky anecdotes that range from moose attacks to accidental national radio interviews, all sprinkled with a dash of astrology and a pinch of Stanley Tucci. “Everyone has dating stories that would make people buckle over with laughter,” says Sloan. “Our show features our very personal bests with the added flair of music and PowerPoint.”

Known for her scandalously relatable ukulele songs and wholesome stand-up clips, Canada’s own Jodie Sloan is making waves globally, with her stand-up and musical comedy having garnered a staggering 40+ million views across social media platforms.

With accolades like the Weekly Award at the Adelaide Fringe 2023 and the Best Comedy title at the Dunedin Fringe (NZ) 2023, the Melbourne-based writer Sweeney Preston is no stranger to comedy (or dating, for that matter). Having performed across Australia, Ireland, the UK, Indonesia, Germany, and New Zealand, his wit, humour and uncanny ability to make a cracking PowerPoint presentation is a sight to behold.

“We want to bring the audience along for the ride,” says Preston. “By the end of the show, we’ll hopefully all be friends … just without the detriments.”

It all goes down at The Snack Monster (part of Jimmy Watson’s Wine Bar). Grab tickets by heading here.
