Darren Hanlon is playing a special birthday show in Brunswick next week

Words by Staff Writer

Darren Hanlon is using his birthday this year as an excuse to come to Melbourne and play a one-off show (just a few days later).

Rather than sit in QLD and contemplate his position in the time space continuum he’s gathering a group of his Melbourne friends together for a night of music and revelry.

Capable of rollicking, Dylan-esque dream narratives grounded in reality, tracks like The Chattanooga Shoot Shoot are pearlers – folk-rocky jams that barrel along with disarming ease.

All through the collection of one of Australia’s favourite folkies, there are the clever turns of phrase and snappy melodies we’ve come to expect, but also enough depth in the songwriting for those who prefer lyricism over the smart stuff.

The mould of vintage Hanlon is understated delivery and sparse instrumentation. He’s no one-trick pony though, instead taking a few twists and turns through varying sonic palettes and genres, like the spooky blues tracks like Halley’s Comet, 1986, which sounds like Paul Kelly singing a lullaby in a cardigan.

Hanlon’s uniquely recognisable style has fantastic songwriting across numerous catchy, intelligent records, with enough detail in their meanderings to keep your interest on repeated listens. He’s been carving his own niche in the Oz music landscape for decades, and this show will please the long-time fans.
