Daniel Moore is not just your average comic –one of life’s ironies is that he’s also a flourishing writer. With his new show ADDHD there’s a little something in it for everyone.
Daniel’s style of humour is more bizarre than most. That’s a pretty broad statement for any comic, but Daniel that just seems to have an innate instinct to lack any sense at all. He talks idly about his decision to move from Sydney to Melbourne and attribute his decision to witness relocation. “But that started becoming a problem when I started putting my name on posters and in magazines and things. I’m now in witness relocation, relocation – which is also the name of a new reality show on Channel Ten.”
He describes ADDHD as silly and structureless, similar to that of everything else that he does. “I found that from my last couple of shows that the best parts were the unstructured bits. So I figured I’d just get rid of the shit bits. And that’s this show, hopefully.”
It’s certainly the way Daniel does most of his shows. A session with Daniel is very casual, usually featuring him having a chat with his audience, mildly interacting with them, then choosing a select few to give shit to. He does every now and then have some semblance of a plan and it’s worth checking out the show he did in support for the Queensland flood relief. Daniel’s style has altered dramatically in this. He’s explored his range a bit further here, going from silly and happy go lucky, to a more neurotic alter ego.
He also reflects on what he wanted to do with his life before he got into the world of comedy. “I started being a comedian because my initial place of opening a colonic irrigation business at a haunted house has fallen through. It was going to be called ‘Scared Shitless.’”
Moore failed university due to “Hey look something shiny!” as he calls it, more commonly known as ADD. But even though he is not a qualified journalist, Daniel has more than a few intriguing articles up his sleeve. First published in Frankie, Daniel has gone onto work for J Mag and The Age. He admitted to getting started though, through and endless charade. “I just lied a lot,” he says casually. “I’d tell my next magazine that this is an example of my most recent article, not telling them that it was my only article. I just kept doing that until there were enough ‘previous articles’ for the lie to be true.”
Luckily, the days of deceit are behind him and Daniel has much to look forward to. He mumbles something about next year’s show, M.E.D.I.C.A.T.I.O.N., but then cheerfully announces his next article due for publication. It will appear on the website The Scrivener’s Fancy about his trip to the US, and in addition to that, his fans can look forward ADDHD.
