‘Creation Creation’ Australian tour: Art, puppetry, animation, sculpture, dance and raving

'Creation Creation' is the new documentary theatre performance that promises a wild, genre-melding ride providing unreliable answers to life's biggest questions.

Windmill Theatre Company’s genre-busting documentary theatre work Creation Creation – co-created by Rosemary Myers, Jonathon Oxlade, Fleur Elise Noble and Roslyn Oades – is a wild journey into human curiosity that sees two unreliable experts attempt to solve some of the Australian community’s most burning questions in an explosion of art, puppetry, animation, sculpture, dance and even a bit of raving.

Creation Creation will kick off its tour with a season at Sydney Opera House in late June, before heading to Arts Centre Melbourne in August and Perth’s AWESOME Festival in September, bringing the show to families all across the country.

Creation Creation is a really special show for us here at Windmill,” says executive director Kaye Weeks, “Rose and the creative team have done an impeccable job creating a theatrical experience that is completely singular, so much fun andalso incredibly moving. We’re excited to be taking it to these three mainstage venues in 2022!”

Based on interviews with Australian’s aged between the age of 8 to 102, Creation Creation sees people from every corner of the community grapple with some of life’s most perplexing questions.

“The starting point for Creation Creation was looking at the big mysteries of life,” says director Rosemary Myers, “and how attempting to answer these burning question unites people across age and culture. Everyone, around the world, has pondered what the meaning of life is at some point. In a lot of ways, this is a show about that.”

Roslyn Oades conducted over 35 hours of interviews where they were to grapple with unanswerable questions like ‘how did the world begin?’, ‘what happens when you die?’, ‘are aliens real?’, and ‘is it possible to lick your elbow?’, which she has whittled down into a 50-minute audio script that two creators, Oxlade and Noble, respond to in real-time on stage. Using every tool in their creative, including sculpture, mime, dance and illustration, the pair build, battle and brawl their way through the mysteries of the universe.

“Jonathon and Fleur are incredible visual artists, and they’re both hilarious performers as well,” says Rosemary, “and to see them miraculously pull off answers to these huge questions is a lot of fun for the audience. And for them, too!”

Creation Creation also features AUSLAN interpretation from Dan Cleasby, a community member who the creative team met during the interview process. Footage of him interpreting and participating in the action is projected onto the set throughout the show, making every performance of Creation Creation accessible to deaf or hard of hearing audience members.

Creation Creation has been a real labour of love for the whole team at Windmill and were thrilled to be able to share it with so many people around the country,” says Rosemary, “We can’t wait to hit the road and answer some of your most burning questions… sort of.”
