Instead of carefully collecting a couple of bands who shared the same sound, Thursday night a variety local musical supports create a totally engaging gig. The mix ofstraight-up melodic punk via Cavalcade, followed by Trial and Error metalmosh crew Phantoms, followed by calculated yet electrifying Brissy band Fires Of Waco was totally engrossing on all fronts and kept us milling at front of stage for the entirety of the evening. Now I know there ain’t a lot else to do at Next! if you’re over 25, sober and sporting a solid sense of self-esteem, but this is still a remarkable feat. More mixed bills please. This need no longer be a novelty occurrence a la Parkway’s recent ‘Mix N Mash’ tour, it needs to be a regular fixture on those stale evenings where your $20 entry buys you three 20 minute sets from identical entities. Make it happen people!
Speaking of old school punx, The Casualities briefly cancelled their Australia tour via their facebook page saying, “due to issues beyond our control we will be forced to cancel our tour of Australia”. Mere moments later brand new dates were announced for a couple of months later. The Melbourne show has thankfully been rescheduled to The East Brunswick Club on November 10. Supports remain The Worst and No Idea.
Everytime I Die haven’t signed up for the Soundwave Counter Revolutions tour, but have instead formed their own posse for string of shows in late September. They’ll join forces with The Acacia Strain and The World Alive and hit Melbourne’s Espy on September 29. Tickets are on sale now.
Meanwhile Hollywood Undead and Skindred have also announced their own Australian tour instead of jumping on the Counter Revolutions bandwagon. They’ll play at The Espy on Tuesday September 27. Tickets are already on sale.
Teenage Bottlerocket are hitting the road this September, but will perform a headlining show in Melbourne on Sunday September 11. Tickets are just $12 for this very decent international act. Lock it in!
Melbourne dudes The Bennies (formerly known as Madonna) are launching their debut album Party! Party! Party! at Gertrudes Brown Couch this Saturday night. These guys have been hocking their ska sound at live venues all over Australia (as well as Japan, Singapore and Malaysia) and this time they’ll be tearing Gertrudes apart with some very decent locals including The Smith Street Band and The Tearaways.
Melbourne’s Ramshackle Armyhave just scored the coveted support slot for The Dropkick Murphy’s second show at The Forum Theatre on October 26. Tickets to this much anticipated show with Lucero are available now. (Nice one Army – Ed)
Totally Unicorn have announced a rather large tour next month that will see them roll into Melbourne’s Gasometer on Friday September 23. They’ll be joined by Robotosauras, Bowcaster, Lazerface and Only Sleeping. Yes plz thx.
